Horace Mann family photographs, ca. 1870-1905.

Photographs relating to the family of Horace Mann, Massachusetts lawyer, state and U.S. legislator, abolitionist, educator, and president of Antioch College in Ohio. Two of the photographs are copy photographs of daguerreotypes of Horace's son Benjamin Pickman Mann and relative E. L. Mann; the original daguerreotypes are stored apart from the collection by format. There are also cabinet card portraits of two unidentified men, as well as stereograph views of Antioch College. Photographers include Notman Photograph Company and William H. Partridge, both of Boston, Mass., and R. M. Gano of Yellow Springs, Ohio.

William H. Partridge was born Sept. 21, 1858, in Wheeling, Virginia. He married Emma Abell in Portland, Oregon, Sept. 1885. He and his brother, Edward J., operated a Portland photography studio between 1885-1889. This studio was apparently a western office of the Partridge Photo Co. of Boston, Mass. William Partridge probably took most of the Alaska views during the summer of 1886 when he was in Sitka and Glacier Bay. William Partridge died in Wellesley, Mass., Dec. 20, 1939. From th...
